Will O' The Wisp made his first appearance attacking a semi-truck and stealing a small bag from its cargo. Even in the initial appearance, the character makes it clear he is being forced to act against his will.

In the course of robbing an office safe, Will O' The Wisp is discovered by Spider-Man. After the Wisp hypnotizes and immobilizes Spider-Man, Jonah Jameson's latest Spider-Slayer incarnation appears and battles Will O' The Wisp with Spider-Man being the prize. The fight ends when Will O' The Wisp is taken by a sudden seizure and is forced retreat.

The next night, high above Times Square, Spider-Man is suddenly attacked by Will O' The Wisp. When the Wisp gets the upper hand and is about to destroy Spider-Man, he has an attack of conscience. Rather than kill the web-slinger, Will O' The Wisp turns and leaps at the man controlling him. However, before he can reach the ground, his controller activates a fail-safe, and Will O' The Wisp disintegrates.
