Serving a 20-year-to-life sentence in a federal penitentiary, the Tarantula managed to recreate his spiked shoes in the prison's shoe shop. Subduing a guard and using the shoes to climb the prison's walls, he met up with his new partner: the Jackal!

Confronting Spider-Man in the New York streets, the Tarantula battles his foe amidst rush-hour traffic. The Tarantula lures Spider-Man aboard a city bus the carries the battling duo through the streets of New York. The bus, driven by the Jackal in disguise, carries Spider-Man to the Brooklyn Bridge. Once there, the Jackal distracts Spider-Man long enough for the Tarantula to knock him unconscious with a drugged shoe tip. Tying Spider-Man up in chains, the Tarantula kicks him off the bridge only to watch in amazed as Spider-Man saves himself. Deciding against fighting Spider-Man and the arrive authorities, the Tarantula and Jackal fly off using a personal jetpack.

As Spider-Man tries to track down the Jackal, he is ambushed by the Tarantula in a darkened abandoned apartment. Again, the two fight, but without distractions, the Tarantula proves to be no match. He is easily outwitted and rendered unconscious by Spider-Man.
