Flint Marko was a inmate at an island prison. One night he escaped through a drainage tunnel and hid in an atomic testing area. Caught in an explosion, he awoke to find that the molecules of his body had combined with the sand itself making him virtually indestructible.

Continuing his life of crime, the Sandman is confronted by Spider-Man while breaking into a bank. He drives off Spider-Man easily by ripping off his mask and brazenly robs the main vault. Spider-Man gets his chance for a re-match when, chased by the police, the Sandman takes refuge in his high school. After being beaten all over the school by the Sandman, Spider-Man finally puts an end to his rampage by sucking him up in an industrial vacuum cleaner.
