Maxwell Markham was a professional wrestler who wrestled under the alias The Grizzly. His violence and cruelty in the ring attracted the attention of one J. Jonah Jameson. Jameson declared Maxwell a menace in the Daily Bugle and the resulting investigation by the wrestling commission ended with Maxwell Markham losing his license.

Eleven years later, the Grizzly was recruited by the Jackal who provided with him with an exo-skeleton and sent him to claim his revenge on Jameson. The Jackal's motivation for recruiting and manipulating the Grizzly this way are unknown.
