As a child raised in an orphanage, Martin Blank was often teased by the other children for his ape-like features and agility. After leaving the orphanage, he briefly joined the circus as a "human ape" but quickly got tired of being laughed at by the crowds. He left (keeping his ape costume) and made his way to New York City. A chance encounter with Spider-Man convinced Martin that he could make a new start and be respected as the costume character known as 'The Gibbon'.
