In Amazing spider-Man #169-#170, Doctor Faustus has several thugs digging through a subway tunnel wall with a laser cannon. When Spider-Man interrupts the construction, Faustus uses a narcotic concealed in his cigarette smoke to bend Spider-Man's mind to his will

He uses Spider-Man to break into a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant. His plan is to introduce a hypnotic additive into the nation's only supply of Antelope Flu Vaccine. This additive is supposed to make the nation's population more susceptible to Faustus' hypnotic control.

Lucky for the United States, the vents in the laboratory clear out Faustus' cigarette fumes freeing Spider-Man from his control. Spider-Man easily defeats Faustus and his thugs and leaves them gift wrapped for the police.
