While attending a Grey Panthers rally, Aunt May has chest pains and collapses during a confrontation with a police officer on the steps of City Hall.

In the hospital, the doctors diagnose her attack as a mild one but plan to keep her for observation. Peter leaves in order to hunt the new Green Goblin, and Aunt May suffers a second, more serious attack that puts her on the brink of death.

In order to perform a life-saving operation, the doctors need Peter (as next-of-kin) to sign a consent form. Peter has his hands full with the Green Goblin and can't be reached immediately. Eventually Peter arrives in time to sign the paperwork, and Aunt May goes through an emergency operation that saves her life.
