Liz Allen appeared in the background of earlier issues of Spider-Man, but was never introduced by name until Amazing Spider-Man #4. After Liz feels sorry for Peter and agrees to go out on a date with him, Peter breaks that date in order to track down the Sandman.

Liz makes multiple appearances as a background character over the years alternating between teasing a nerdy Peter Parker with the rest of the high school gang, breaking up arguments between Peter and Flash, and trying to get Peter to come out and join the rest of the gang.

In Amazing Spider-Man #6, Liz is briefly taken hostage by thieves at the Natural History Museum. However she is rescued by Spider-Man.

After Peter 'impersonates' Spider-Man in order to save Betty Brant (Amazing Spider-Man #12), Liz develops a crush on Peter. She flirts with him, shows off her new hairdo, and tries to convince Peter to go out with her. Peter stays faithful to Betty however and turns Liz down at every opportunity. When Liz flirts openly with Peter in front of Betty (Amazing Spider-Man #15), it causes friction between Betty and Peter. Liz's constant attention eventually leads to Peter and Betty's breakup in Amazing Spider-Man #17.

In Amazing Spider-Man #17, Liz's father allows Flash to use his dinner club to host the first meeting of the Spider-Man fan club. Liz encourages Peter to come, but then starts to suspect that Peter is secretly Spider-Man. Peter manages to make appearance as both himself and Spider-Man (and battle the Green Goblin no less) during the course of the evening and removes Liz's suspicions.
