Betty is first introduced as JJJ secretary and go-fer girl. She quickly catches Peter's eye. It isn't too long before the two begin to see each other outside of the Daily Bugle, and when Aunt May is hospitalized, Betty spends a lot of time with her at the hospital while Peter goes out to earn enough money to pay for May's operation.

When Betty is shaken down by the Enforcers for money she owes the Big Man, Peter steps in and gets roughed up a little bit. Betty lies about why the Enforcers were hassling her. In her shame and embarassment, Betty quits the Daily Bugle and travels to rural Pensylvania.
